Identities of 3 of 5 Alleged ABSU Gang Rapists Revealed

Details of 3 of the 5 alleged Abia State University Gang of 5 rapists have been revealed as Ifeanyi Ogu Justin, Jonah Uche (final year or extra year accountancy) and Zaki ( Duberville Lodge ABSU). The Abia State University gang rape video hit the Internet on Wednesday, August 17. Since then, the rage it generated nationwide has grown by leaps and bounds. Citizens, non-governmental organizations and a minister have called on security agencies to unmask the five male students who raped a female student of the university. But while the security agencies dawdle, Nigerians have taken it upon themselves to fish out the five unidentified young men involved in the rape.

The video, shows five laughing young men having brutal sex with a helpless girl.

While the face of the girl could be seen, the faces of the men in the clip are blurred. The lady begged to be either left alone or killed, but the men threatened to detain her indefinitely in the room if she resisted. The incident supposedly took place on Tuesday, August 16.
But while the police, the school authorities and the state government have denied the report, a growing number of Internet users launched initiatives to unmask the rapists and help the victim.

According to a blogger that first posted the picture, "I have taken the very BOLD and RISKY move to produce photographs of FACEBOOK PHOTOS that have matched NAMES of the alleged Rapists as well as the University, which in this case is the ABIA STATE UNIVERSITY (ABSU).

"I realise they may be very many Ifeanyi Ogu Justin but it will be a coincidence that more than one attended Abia State University or was in the department of Social Sciences…..it will be such a wild chance of that happening.

"So, I have decided to publish these photographs. It may well be a coincidence, but its a risk I am prepared to take. Let me make it clear now, that I am not accusing them directly as RAPISTS, neither am I accusing them as members of the ABSU GANG OF 5.
I rest my case, but I just have to do this to proof that this case WILL and SHOULD set a precedent…well I hope so.

"So the Photograph of the JONAH UCHE has it that he Studied Accountancy at Abia state university and has 974 FACEBOOK FRIENDS. While the FACEBOOK PHOTOGRAPH of IFEANYI OGU JUSTIN HAS 4950 FB FRIENDS and also stated that he attends ABSU."

Nearly all those who have watched the video have expressed indignation. A comment left on a popular blog says, "And do you know what her
offence was, why this girl was violated? She supposedly insulted one of the boys. In the violation video, which lasts for over an hour, the
girl cried her eyes out and tried to fight them off in the first few minutes, after a while they subdued her by slapping her, rough handling
her, threatening to kill her and having rough sex with her. After a while she gave in instead of fighting.

"Then, she starts mentioning names, and in between, you will hear her scream out in pain as one guy stands up and another penetrates her, and
all the while, these boys are laughing."
Many Nigerians expressed hopes that the names mentioned by the victim, in the video, would lead to the rapists. The rapists let out
their names inadvertently as they called out to one another to take their turns. The names called out are Uchenna, Wisdom, Zaki, Chisom and
Ifeanyi (or Ugbanyi) all believed to be students of ABSU, Uturu.

Also, one of the rapists boasted he was a Part 4 Law student of the university , while another revealed he was on industrial attachment.

Although the video has caught the attention of government, observers say it has not moved fast enough. Only the Minister of Youth
Development, Mr. Bolaji Abdullahi, appears to have given the incident the attention it deserves, watchers say. The minister posted on Twitter
that he had spoken to ABSU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Chibuzor Ogbuagu, and the state police command on the matter.
Abdullahi, who said he contacted the VC on the telephone,tweeted, "Just spoke with VC ABSU. He was categorical that it did not happen in his
university. He challenges the authencity of the story."
Abdullahi said he had also spoken with the Minister of Police Affairs, Navy Capt. Caleb Olubolade (retd.), and got assurances that the police
would investigate the incident.
"Just spoke with Hon. Min of Police Affairs who is now speaking with IG on the ABSU gang rape case. Justice will be done!" he said.
Meanwhile, female rights activists have started mobilising for a protest walk in ABSU's main campus in Uturu on Wednesday. They said
they would like the university authorities to act decisively on the matter.
Now that the names of some culprits have been revealed, Nigerians disgusted at the incident wait to see how justice will be done to the victim.

The civil and human rights community have expressed their concern. Hon. Minister of Youth and Development, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi who evidently saw the video, had issued a statement on Sunday 18th Sept., 2011, through his Special Assistant on Media, Julius Agunro, and condemned the act as “barbaric, decadent, despicable and wicked” had called on the Police and others to step up action but no arrest or interrogation has been made even as we write and the victim has not yet been found, despite that the Minster promised to rehabilitate her if seen. We don’t know if she was probably left dead and discarded by the mob; these are leads to follow, with due respect.

By virtue of section 316 subsections 2 & 3 of the Criminal Code Act, a person or persons who inflict grievous harm on another in the course of doing an unlawful act that result in death, is guilty of murder. S.357 states that: “any person who has unlawful carnal knowledge of a woman or girl, without her consent, if the consent is obtained, by force or by means of threat or intimidation…is guilty of an offence which is called rape.” S.358 of the Criminal Code Act prescribes a life sentence for the offence of rape. Also s. 320(2) of the same Act condemns any person who through his act or misconduct endangers human life, to imprisonment for life for the felonious offence. Justice must be seen to meet this criminal behaviour.

Anaphylactic shock might have been inflicted on the victim, Miss X and that is fatal. Furthermore the gangsters were seen in the video clip on condoms; chances are that if they are Latex condoms, these can be lethal.

In the words of Attorney Carol Aijie, there are several provisions of the Nigerian Criminal Laws and our Fundamental Rights Laws that were blatantly broken by the gang of 5 lawless men, portending more dangerous signals if allowed to walk away to associate with other members of the society, many of whom are harmless.
